Organic Vitamins and Minerals
Here’s where the rubber meets the road in the supplement industry. What I’m about to share with you, nearly all supplement manufacturers do NOT want you to know…What is it? More than 99% of all vitamins and minerals that you are consuming in supplements are man-made, synthetic, NOT REAL, and are cheap, cheap, cheap!
Scientists will tell you that your body cannot tell the difference between a real vitamin, derived from real foods and a synthetic vitamin made in a lab. This is absolutely not true and the reason is that when you consume vitamins from real foods, there are multiple co-factors that work in synergy with the vitamin to enhance absorption and thus effectiveness. That is not the case with an isolated, synthetic, man-made vitamin.
In addition, the absorption rate of most synthetic vitamins is only 9%. Yes, that right, 9%! Which means that NINETY-ONE PERCENT of what you are paying for in a vitamin supplement is being washed down the drain whether it’s a liquid, capsule, tablet or powder.
An interesting fact: most supplements are made using stearates that are hydrogenated fats such as magnesium stearate, stearic acid and calcium stearate. They are made by hydrogenating cottonseed or palm oil as lubricants; added to the raw materials so that production machinery will run at maximum speeds. These substances decrease the absorption of nutrients. Those with impaired digestion (most of us) may have particular difficulty absorbing nutrients coated with stearates.
Also, most fruit and vegetable concentrates used in dietary supplements are dried with very high heat, destroying their nutritional value and subsequently their effectiveness. While they don’t supply much nutrient [value], they are included in the supplement to make it appear natural, while all the nutrients listed on the label come from synthetic or other unnatural additions. These so-called “whole food” supplements containing fruit or vegetable concentrates have to be “spiked” with synthetic vitamins and other unnatural nutrients in order to list any appreciable amounts of vitamins and/or minerals.
For example, almost all of the vitamin C in supplements is made in a laboratory, despite labeling that implies otherwise. The label might say, “ascorbic acid from sago palm.” Dextrose, a form of sugar that contains no vitamin C at all, is extracted from sago palm and used as the base molecular material for a complex laboratory process that synthesizes vitamin C. Or the label might say “vitamin C derived from the finest natural sources.” True, but the vitamin C was synthesized. It might also say “with rose hips and acerola,” which are then used as the base material for the tablet or capsule. But a tablet of rose hips or acerola can contain only about forty milligrams of truly natural vitamin C; the rest is synthesized.
Labels also often proclaim “natural” B vitamins” derived from yeast. But companies manufacturing yeast add laboratory-synthesized B vitamins to the food fed to the yeast during its growth, and then fortify the yeast further with additional B vitamins once it has grown. This allows the production of yeast of any B-vitamin potency desired, which is then used to formulate vitamin pills labeled “B vitamins derived from yeast.” (Quick tip: if it says only folic acid, not folate, it’s most likely not true B9!).
Another misrepresentation is being able to claim “manufactured in the U.S.A” even if they are using synthetic vitamins or ingredients from other countries, including China. This means that although they are sourcing ingredients from contaminated and non-organic sources, as long as they are all put together in the U.S., they can claim the above and not reveal their sourcing. This happens a LOT!
So hardworking families are being duped into buying knockoffs. That’s selfish and wrong but not actually harmful, right?
Wrong. According to Dr. Campbell McBride, the body “has been designed to use natural forms of these nutrients and often does not recognize the synthetic forms and does not know what to do with them. There is a growing suspicion that a lot of cases of kidney stones, for example, are caused by supplementing synthetic forms of vitamin C, which would represent most vitamin C supplements available in shops.” (Gut & Psychology Syndrome p. 296).
Dr. Maffetone agrees, saying that “A study on vitamin C (Am J Clin Nutr; Jan 2008) showed adults taking the synthetic version had serious side effects. Doses of 1,000 mg of vitamin C a day impaired their energy systems (significantly hampering their endurance capacity), specifically by weakening the mitochondria of the cell (which burns fat and sugar). It also had significant adverse effects on the antioxidant system (a key immune regulator). Those who take vitamin C often take this amount or more, and it’s almost always synthetic. Children may be even more vulnerable.”
Too Much Can Actually Cause Deficiencies! – many nutrients compete for absorption sites in the gut. So, if we supplement too many of particular vitamins, calcium, for example, it may impair absorption of other nutrients: magnesium, zinc, copper, iron, some amino acids and others, creating deficiencies in those nutrients. A supplement should be just that: supplementation of nutrition ADDED to a healthy diet to ensure you are getting the daily amounts of vitamins, minerals and nutrients needed; not an excessive amount.
After putting together my own supplement from scratch, here’s what I’ve learned:
It takes hundreds of hours of research before you can even start to formulate a product like Supplify®. I have over 25 years of experience in the health and supplement field and I’ve done ALL the research on this supplement personally. There most likely isn’t a company in existence that does that – most outsource to other companies for an existing base formula and then tweak it here and there so they can call it proprietary without really knowing everything that’s in it or where it comes from! So how do you actually get enough vitamins and minerals into a supplement?
Well, first, according to two supplement manufacturers in the United States that I’ve spoken with, they said it is impossible to extract vitamins and minerals from organic produce because it would deplete the fruits and vegetables from existence! While that’s a slight exaggeration, what he really means is that the process is so expensive, it would cut into the profit margins of the supplement companies and therefore they buy cheap synthetics primarily from China which, although China may claim to grow organic produce, it is so polluted that the raw materials are contaminated! Yuck! Additionally, to keep costs at a bare minimum and because they have so many middle men, employees, and additional expenses, it behooves the companies to keep their raw material costs to a minimum. Therefore, the majority of supplements that cost the consumer $50, $60, $70 or more actually contain about FIVE DOLLARS or LESS of ingredients!
I wanted to formulate the best supplement on the market regardless of what it cost me to make. While Supplify’s ingredients are rather pricey, I don’t have the extra overhead that so many mega-companies do, so I can still offer the best product at competitive pricing.
